Flu Shots Q & A
Why get a flu shot?
The flu shot offers you the best protection against the prominent flu virus strain, including H1N1, or swine flu. Influenza, or the 'flu', is a viral infection that attacks your respiratory system. Flu shots not only help to combat the flu but also help to prevent the spread of the disease to others.
Who should get a flu shot?
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends anyone over the age of six months to consider getting the shot. Vaccinations for high-risk group (such as women who are pregnant, elderly individuals and young children), can also help prevent complications from contracting the virus.
People dealing with a chronic illness represent the highest risk groupliving with:
- Asthma
- Cancer
- COPD
- Diabetes
- HIV
- Liver disease
Is there anyone who can’t get a flu shot?
The doctor will discuss your medical history and ask you questions to determine if a flu shot is safe for you.
Are you allergic to eggs? Many of the flu vaccinations contain egg proteins that trigger a reaction. If you are sensitive, the doctor may still suggest you get the treatment, but take precautions to manage an allergic reaction should it happen.
Have you had a reaction to a flu vaccination in the past? Any person who has had tolerance problems in the past may not be a good candidate. It is normal to feel a little sick after the shot. That is part of the vaccination process, but a severe reaction, like shortness of breath or hives, means something else might be going on and it's important to talk to your doctor about this.
